Xylem and Phloem

Our class have been learning about xylem and phloem. We learnt that they are special tubes inside plants. We enjoyed watching a video about it. A funny plant called Robert Plant even sang a song about it. Next the class decided to do an experiment with celery. We put three stalks of celery into a jar that had blue food colouring in it. Each of us made a hypothesis about what we thought might happen. We wrote down what we did (method), and now we are waiting to see what happens.

After one day there is a little bit of change in the short one. We can see a little bit of blue coming through tubes inside the top of one of the stalks. Those tubes are the xylem. They suck up water and nutrients. The phloem helps to carry the energy around the plant so it can grow.
We will keep observing it to see what happens next. Here are a couple of photos from yesterday.
