Our bean seed hasn't germinated in cottonwool yet, but we are watching it each day and Henry is drawing any changes on our an organiser sheet. We also want to see if a bean seed could germinate in something else, other than cottonwool. What might work? We brainstormed ideas. "Let's try dirt," Troy said, followed by Mac who said, "We could use soil." He learnt that soil was another name for dirt.
"Let's try putting it between leaves with holes in, to let the water through", said Kendall.
"We could use potting dirt (mix)", said Henry.
"We could try sand," said Chloe.
"Bark might work," Mac said.
"I think we should try stones," Henry said. "Also, let's try to see if a seed will germinate on top of the dirt, instead of being planted underneath."
So, all except for the bark, we brought containers with these different things to experiment with. (We will try bark on another day.)
Each part of the growing container had something different to try and germinate each bean seed in. Some of the children helped to water each seed.
Here are some photos on the first day of our experiment. We will monitor these each day and note what happens, on our organiser sheet. The photo at the top of the page shows a seed sitting on the top of potting mix, and one that you can't see, under the potting mix. The photos after the writing show the seed in some leaves the children found, a seed in dirt (soil), a seed in sand, a seed between stones and rocks, and the whole container with the different parts.
